Jerome S. Gore

Jerome Gore was born and raised in Chicago. He graduated from the University of Illinois, and in 1941 married Shirley Zax. Mrs. Gore and their son, Stanley, predeceased him.

Mr. Gore worked in the clothing industry for many years. Known as one of the leaders in the industry, he worked 45 years at Hartmarx, one of the oldest men's apparel stores in Chicago. Both a president and CEO, Mr. Gore helped build the company from $100 million to $1.3 billion.

Mr. Gore played golf and collected art and was very active in the community. He was involved with many charities and served on several Boards including Illinois Bell and serving on the Board of Sportmart for Larry Hochberg, a very close friend of his. He gave generously to UJA and Federation for many years. Mr. Gore was very proud of his Jewish heritage. His father came to the U.S. in the 1900's and had to change the family name from Gorski to Gore because he was unable to get work. This made a lasting impression on Jerome.

In 1995, Mr. and Mrs. Gore established the Stanley N. Gore philanthropic fund in honor of their son. In addition to the philanthropic fund remainder, Mr. Gore left a specific bequest to the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan Chicago.

Jerome Gore passed away of Alzheimer's disease at the age of 83. He is survived by his son, Larry, five grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.
